Are you a good candidate for LASIK?
The ideal patient to consider a LASIK consultation is anyone over 18 years of age who desires to rid themselves of glasses or contact lenses for quality distance vision.
(If you are over 40-45 years old you still may need inexpensive reading glasses/ magnifying glasses for very small print, even after LASIK.)
LASIK is an amazing procedure to reshape your cornea with a laser to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism, or farsightedness. These are all optical errors in your eye system. This highly technical and innovative technique corrects, much like shaping your contact lenses or glasses lenses to sharpen your vision, except it is your eye (cornea) that ends up with the new clear shape, thus eliminating your old glasses or contacts lenses. Amazing! The freedom to see, naturally!
The most assured way to see if you are a LAIK candidate is to have a complex consultation by an experienced corneal LASIK surgeon, like Dr. Chris Shumake (Duke Corneal fellowship). Our knowledgeable LASIK coordinator is always available to answer questions and concerns about your LASIK surgery or consultation – giving you the first class care you deserve. Our LASIK patients often cannot believe they have waited so long to have their vision correction surgery. So trust us to help you with your LASIK needs, you will be glad you have.
Presbyopia
Getting older? Need reading glasses only in dim light and very small print? You are not alone. This is normal for the “over 40 crowd” and LASIK will NOT reverse or treat this condition. So Happy Birthday and have a great time picking out some very attractive “readers” in the Optical Shop.

Step 1
Using an instrument called a microkeratome, the surgeon creates
a small protective flap of corneal tissue that is gently lifted
back.
|
 |
Step 2
The excimer laser applies a cool beam of light, which gently
reshapes the cornea allowing images to be more sharply focused
by the retina to correct the individual refractive error.

 |
Step 3
Finally, the protective flap that was created in Step 1 is
gently placed back in its original position and begins healing
immediately with little to no discomfort. |
