The Eye Institute
The Eye Institute was founded in September 1996. Dr. McManus and Dr. Shumake were affiliated with another practice in the Melbourne area when they decided to open their own practice in 1996. Opening in September of 1996 we worked in approximately 3,500 square feet of space with 7 employees. By June of 1998 we expanded our space to approximately 5,000 square feet and by the year 2000 we had taken over the entire 2nd floor of our building occupying approximately 11,000 square feet of space.

We opened a satellite office in the Rockledge area in April of 1999, which had approximately 3,500 square feet. In November of 2000 we expanded our Rockledge office space to comprise approximately 7,000 square feet. Because of overwhelming growth, in August of 2003 we moved our Melbourne office from 2202 South Babcock Street to 1995 West NASA Boulevard. Our clinical area increased to approximately 18,000 square feet. Our Optical Shop opened in January 2004. Our Ambulatory Surgical Center on the 1st floor of the main building, which occupies approximately 17,000 square feet opened in March of 2006. A number of surgeons other than those of The Eye Institute, utilize the surgery center as well.
